Not illustrated. 1920 Excerpt: ...azo compounds known as tetrazo salts. As previously stated, the carbolic oil fraction from the distillation of coal tar contains phenols and naphthalene. Common phenol--C,,H5OH (hydroxy-benzene)--may be considered as benzene in which one atom of hydrogen has been replaced by the " hydroxyl" group OH. Similarly, cresol is hydroxy-toluene. These two substances, with others of a similar character, are therefore hydroxy derivatives of the aromatic hydrocarbons. By treatment with caustic alkali, and subsequent acidification, the phenols can be separated from the naphthalene. Pure phenol is a colourless crystalline substance with a pungent odour and having a powerful burning action on the skin. It coagulates albumen, and is a powerful germicide. The commercial product in contact with air quickly becomes liquid, and acquires a reddish-brown colour. Phenol is soluble in water, and very soluble in alcohol and ether. With sulphuric acid it forms phenol-sulphonic acid. With strong nitric acid the yellow colour Promo A01n (trinitro-phenol) is formed. By heating with sulphuric and oxalic acids the red colouring matter Rosomo A01n (aurin) is obtained. The class of colouring matters to which this latter body belongs is analogous to that of the basic colours from rosaniline, vizthe triphenyl-methane class. Phenol reacts with the products of the diazotisation of benzidine and toluidine, giving rise to a series of azo dyestuffs known as direct or substantive colours, from their power to dye cotton without a mordant. N aphthalene--C,0H 8--is a solid hydrocarbon forming colourless crystalline plates and having a faint characteristic odour. It is insoluble in water, but soluble in alcohol and ether. By oxidation it is converted into phthalic acid--C,,H,(COOH)2. By t...
